Immediate Media is looking for a writer who fully supports publishers, working on the developing portfolio of Giggly magazines and products and preschool magazines.

Role Overview

We are looking for a Writer to fully support the Editors, working across our developing portfolio of Giggly magazines and products, and pre-school magazines. We are the no.1 children’s magazine publisher in the UK with the biggest preschool brands including CBeebies, Disney, Numberblocks, Alphablocks, Bluey, PJ Masks, Andy’s Amazing Adventures. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about making magazines and products for children and their grown-ups.

You could be a Writer looking for a new challenge, a graduate or an Editorial Assistant looking for the next step up. Either way, you’ll be bursting with innovative, original and exciting ideas and be able to create pages that really engage our pre-school audience. You’ll be able to deliver editorial that our readers and parents want in this highly competitive market.

You should be passionate about children’s magazines, organised, motivated and able to remain calm while working to a rigorous and fast-paced schedule. You should have great communication skills and able to work as part of a successful, high performing team. You’ll have excellent writing/subbing skills and you’ll be thorough, organised and able to prioritise. Knowledge of InDesign is essential.


  • Take responsibility for writing and laying out pages and subbing and checking them so they are ready for design
  • Take responsibility for originating new and fresh ideas for each magazine to ensure the titles have a current feel
  • Create content using InDesign ensuring that font and styles accurately comply with the style sheet and maintain the look of all titles. Training will be provided.
  • Attend flatplanning and other meetings to plan and discuss content
  • With guidance from the Deputy Editor/Editor maintain a steady flow of material to ensure that the team keeps to production schedules and to liaise with the Production team, Art team and other Writer/Sub Editors to ensure the magazines run to schedule and meet deadlines
  • Work with the Deputy Editor and Editor to prioritise and plan within busy schedules to meet constant deadlines
  • Ensure all content is on-brand, to deadline and complies with relevant BBC/Disney policies – effectively acting as a sub-editor for all copy from internal and external staff
  • Work with the Deputy Editor and Editor to ensure you have a personal development plan in place identifying your own strengths as well as areas for development
  • Handle and deal with reader enquiries and complaints. Liaise with the Deputy Editor, Editor, Buying and Legal teams to ensure that information is passed on and actioned appropriately
  • Keep up to date with new programmes and trends that are relevant to our magazines
  • Keep abreast of market developments, coming up with new ideas to keep ahead of competitors
  • Organise and direct photoshoots, both in studio and on location
  • Source and make props for magazines/ photoshoots as required
  • Take responsibility for commissioning material where appropriate
  • Carry out picture research when necessary, following picture research best practice guidelines
  • Promote the use of DAM/ELVIS where possible for all initial picture research, followed by preferred picture agencies where Immediate Media has negotiated favourable group rates. Training will be provided
  • In support of the team, proactively seek, maintain and foster opportunities to meet and engage with children, parents and families to ensure that our content stays relevant to our readers
  • Safeguard children that we meet and have contact with, at all times
  • With guidance from the Deputy Editor and Editor, liase with rights holders, schedulers, programme makers, production staff, agents and talent to ensure that all content, whether print or digital, is correct, current and relevant to our readers
  • Attend meetings with the editorial team as a whole to discuss overall design and direction of children’s titles and competitors
  • With guidance from the Deputy Editor and Editor, maintain a positive working relationship with rights holders and programme makers ensuring a good, positive working relationship with them and a good outcome for all
  • Work with the Deputy Editor and Editor on design, redesigns to content, style or structure.Support the Deputy Editor and Editor to manage change effectively
  • With guidance from the Deputy Editor and Editor, work on pitches for new business as well as new launches when necessary
  • Take responsibility for originating high quality ideas for digital content to ensure it is exciting and packed with learning opportunities for our audience as required
  • With guidance from the Deputy Editor and Editor, liaise with the Marketing team to ensure that the marketing strategy and marketing campaigns are delivered effectively
  • Comply with all relevant Immediate Media safety rules, procedures and guidelines, and be aware of responsibilities under the Immediate Media safety policy
  • Comply with Immediate Media’s policies on diversity, and apply the principles of the policy when carrying out the rol
  • Comply with BBC Editorial Guidelines and BBC Magazines Commercial Guidelines to help ensure our BBC branded magazines and websites meet the values and standards of the BBC
  • Be familiar with the BBC’s Diversity and Inclusion strategy and apply its principles to our BBC titles.


  • Must be able to demonstrate experience of creating content for children.
  • Knowledge of the pre-school and educational market.
  • Must be able to show a good understanding of our readers, how they use children’s magazines and how they learn.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the Early Years Curriculum.
  • Good knowledge of pre-school tv channels including CBeebies channel and digital content.
  • Ability to contribute ideas, communicate openly and positively with the team and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to juggle tasks and prioritise well.
  • Experience of In Design is essential.
  • Experience and knowledge of media law is desirable although training can be given.
