The Sentinel — a 6-days-per-week newspaper located in Lewistown, PA — has an immediate opening for a full-time sports editor.
The sports editor is a junior managerial position. The person filling this role will be tasked with making assignments for sports staff — including himself or herself — and freelance writers and photographers, covering games on deadline, compiling game results reported by coaches, editing sports copy, selecting appropriate Associated Press content for the daily sports pages, submitting invoices each month for freelance sports writers and photographers and other tasks as assigned by the managing editor and/or publisher.
The successful candidate will possess a broad knowledge of several different sports including baseball, basketball, field hockey, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. The successful candidate will also have his or her own reliable transportation to and from assignments. The company partially reimburses monthly for expenses incurred while on company business.
While providing occasional coverage of intercollegiate and professional sports, The Sentinel's primary focus for sports coverage is the local high schools, including Mifflin County, Juniata, East Juniata, Midd-West and Mount Union as well as private schools Belleville Mennonite, Juniata Christian and Mifflin County Christian Academy.
Experience with a professional or collegiate news operation is a definite plus, especially experience covering sporting events.
This position requires primarily evening work and will also require occasional Saturday assignments.
