Location: Enid News & Eagle, located in Enid, OK, a town of 51,000 in northwest Oklahoma with four local school districts and a branch of Northern Oklahoma College (NOC). The News & Eagle primarily serves Enid and Garfield County but also includes coverage of several school districts in northwest Oklahoma.
The Enid News & Eagle is an award-winning community news and media organization looking for a highly organized, skilled sports editor to join our team.
The Job
We are looking for a creative and motivated sports editor to cover sports assignments for a variety of high school and local community college sports in a fair, accurate and balanced way.
Responsibilities Include
- Planning daily online and print coverage for sports events and news, including prioritizing which events should be “covered” vs. which can be reported in summary.
- Assigns, edits and designs sports pages for a six-day print publication and posts sports stories for the daily web edition, ensuring that assignments meet the sports coverage and content needs for each product and that the content mix reflects men’s and women’s sports.
- Recruits and supervises stringer or contract sports writers.
- Attends required staff meetings and calendar meetings.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Ability to type 60 words a minute.
- 1-3 years’ experience working in a deadline-driven news organization.
- Strong journalistic reporting, writing, editing, grammar, word-usage skills.
- Strong time-management skills and resourcefulness.
- Knowledge of AP style.
- Familiarity with desktop publishing programs, including Adobe InDesign and Content Management Software.
