Job Description

Genomics England is looking for a Science Writer to join the Communications and Engagement team for 12 months on a Fixed Term Contract (FTC).

Genomics England successfully led the world-leading 100,000 Genomes Project, which compared and analysed individuals’ genetic codes to help diagnose, treat and prevent illness.

We're now accelerating our impact, working with the NHS to further develop and embed genomic healthcare and research in Britain. Our next chapter involves working with patients, doctors, scientists, government and industry to improve genomic testing, and help researchers access the health data and technology they need to make new medical discoveries and create more effective, targeted medicines for everybody.

Job Description

Are you a science writer with experience of preparing and cataloguing scientific papers for submission to academic journals?

We are looking for a Science Writer to join the Communications and Engagement team for 12 months on a fixed term contract (FTC). You will be part of the new and growing Community Engagement team that links our researcher, research participants and other relevant stakeholders, connecting the dots and facilitating good working partnerships between them. The Community Engagement team works closely with the wider Communications and Engagement directorate, which includes press and media, marketing, and specialist engagement teams.

In this role you will be working closely with the science and clinical teams, bioinformaticians, and the wider Comms and Engagement team to support the development of our offering around research activities, which includes increasing our publication output and enhancing our standing in the international research community.

Responsibilities Include

  • Cataloguing scientific papers that are either in preparation or will shortly be ready for preparation
  • Working across the company to coordinate and help write scientific papers reporting research activities and findings relating to Genomics England’s dataset, including:
    • Developing writing plans
    • Managing and coordinating with different authors
    • Formatting manuscripts
    • Final submission
    • Managing reviewer responses
    • Final proof checking
  • Assisting relevant teams in preparation of research grant or funding applications
  • Working with the wider Comms and Engagement team to develop lay and scientific content around Genomics England’s research activities, including reports of the company’s research outputs for both internal and external purposes
  • Assisting in the preparation of presentations for scientific conferences

Skills and Experience For Success

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Demonstrable experience in and understanding of the scientific paper publication process and of what makes a paper significant
  • Excellent English language writing skills, with high attention to detail
  • Significant human genomics research experience, preferably in cancer or heritable disease fields
  • Experience in project management and stakeholder management
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work across diverse teams
  • Strong IT skills including PowerPoint

A Master’s degree in genetics, genomics or a similar subject (preferably human genetics/genomics); a PhD in (human) genetics is desirable.

Genomics England operate a blended working model, as we know our people appreciate the flexibility. We expect most people to come into the office 2 times each month as a minimum. However, this will vary according to role and will be agreed with your team leader. For some people this is 1 day a quarter, for others it is several days a week. There is no expectation that staff will return to the office full time unless they want to. The exception would be some of our roles that would require you to be on site full time e.g., lab teams, reception team.

Our teams and squads have, and will continue to, reflect on what works best for them to work together successfully and have the freedom to design working patterns to suit, beyond the minimum. Our office locations at the moment are Cambridge and Farringdon (London) and in Autumn 2022 we are relocating our London office location to Canary Wharf. We will also be expanding our regional offices.

Looking ahead to our move to Canary Wharf, we will be designing our new space with blended working in mind, and with the flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns. During the pandemic we will be following government advice on working from home guidance.
