The Texas Tribune, the state’s go-to source for Texas politics and public policy news, is hiring a newsletter writer. The Texas Tribune reaches more than 170,000 readers through its newsletters, and that audience is rapidly growing.
Of more than a dozen newsletters, some are produced by journalists (including our premier free daily newsletter, The Brief); many automatically generated via RSS feeds and one (The Blast) is a premium product. The Tribune is seeking a newsletter writer to help us elevate our newsletters and find new readers for them. This full-time role will report to the Director of Audience.
We’re looking for someone who understands the medium of email and loves to foster connections with readers. You’re excited about the prospect of informing audiences via newsletters and have an eye for effective subject lines.
You can write fairly and empathetically but also with voice and analysis — readers will know the difference between getting a morning briefing from you versus someone else. You are an avid consumer of politics/policy news and will use your talents to make our journalism more accessible to a wider audience.
You’re excited about the prospect of collaborating with reporters and editors. As the Tribune enters 2022, we have some big and ambitious goals for our newsletters. This person will help us achieve those goals — which includes growing our lists and expanding what we offer readers over email. We’re looking for someone who can balance the role of strategist and writer. We can’t wait to work with you.
The salary for this position starts at $65,000 + depending on qualifications.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Writing The Brief and The Brief Weekly, curating the most important policy and politics news from texastribune.org and other news sites that Texans need to know in our flagship newsletters.
- Shepherding The Blast, our premium newsletter that goes out three times a week, in collaboration with our politics team
- Working in tandem with other members of the Tribune’s audience team to revamp our RSS newsletters
- Helping us grow audiences for Texas Tribune email products
- Developing additional newsletters designed to reach and engage specific audiences
- Working an evening shift on weekdays and monthly weekend shifts
- BA/BS degree and 2+ years of relevant experience OR equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Prior experience working in a fast-paced dynamic newsroom on deadlines or in breaking news situations
- Experience producing newsletters in MailChimp or other email management systems
- Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment or remotely.
- Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing and meeting deadlines.
- Excellent writing, reviewing, and editing skills
- Strong communication and story telling skills and ability to research and fact check information on your own

The Texas Tribune office is located in downtown Austin, steps away from the Texas Capitol building. This position is based in Austin, but we will consider candidates who are based elsewhere in Texas. We have colleagues in the organization that come into the office on a regular basis and colleagues that are based in various cities throughout the United States.
