Job Description

The grant writer would work directly with the New America Chicago team with some support from the New America's Development team.

New America is a think tank dedicated to renewing the promise of America by continuing the quest to realize our nation's highest ideals, honestly confronting the challenges caused by rapid technological and social change, and seizing the opportunities those changes create. New America is a leader in the public interest technology space and has strong portfolios in social cohesion/democracy, education, family economic security, and global studies.

A key part of our local work in the family economic security portfolio, New America Chicago is a nonpartisan, policy innovation lab based at The Chicago Community Trust.

We work with local communities to research and advocate for public policies that improve racial and economic equity. We convene community members, thought leaders, and policymakers committed to finding practical solutions to community challenges, particularly those related to racial inequity, work, and income. Our work uses techniques from public interest technology and the tech world to test innovative solutions with end users.

As our small New America Chicago team builds out our community policy work, we need the services of a contractor to help organize and conduct our fundraising with a focus on grant writing. The grant writer would work directly with the New America Chicago team with some support from New America’s Development team.

The contractor will work closely with staff and potential donors to identify and secure grant funders for, but not limited to the community policy lab. The grant writer will research, identify and write grant proposals and reports, manage a grants calendar and keep track of various deadlines. The ideal applicant is willing to also advise us on strategy and help develop our case for support. The grant writer must be highly organized, detailed oriented and exceptional in written and oral communication.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This job description shall include, but is not limited to, the following duties:

  • Work directly with the program director and lead staff on particular grant proposals.
  • Research, identify, present, and maintain sources of public and private grant opportunities that align with our vision.
  • Coordinates with staff and assembles information pertinent to grant applications.
  • Contacts and follow up leads with granting organizations and agencies.
  • Develops proposals, writes grants, gathers supporting documentation, and submits them to granting agency in a timely manner, meeting all agency guidelines/requirements, and complying with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensures quality, accuracy, and completeness of all submitted grant proposals. Proposals are well researched, well-written, well-documented, with a well-developed budget.
  • Meets established benchmarks for submission and successful applications.
  • Writes grant reports in coordination with program staff.
  • Solves problems effectively, efficiently, and creatively utilizes sound judgment and maintains strict confidentiality.
  • Develops and maintains a master file of pending, existing, and past grants and contracts.
  • Utilizes Google Drive system to share files with team.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • May perform other duties assigned.

Abilities Required

  • Demonstrated experience in identifying, applying for, and receiving grants from public and private sources
  • Knowledge, understanding, and ability to perform all aspects of the job
  • Experience and knowledge of corporate or foundation giving
  • Skilled at securing nonprofit grants or donations from individuals, foundations, and/or corporations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent research, analysis, and reporting skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collegially with others
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Willingness to learn about or knowledge of public interest tech, civic tech, or human centered design


  • Familiarity with Midwestern and Illinois based philanthropy.
  • Associates’ degree, Bachelor’s degree, or certificate in related field including business administration, communications, marketing, grant writing, fundraising, or social sciences

Job Type: This position is a contractor/consultant role and will be paid hourly. Benefits are not included.
