Job Description

Andreeseen Horowitz is looking for a strong editor to join the expanding editorial team, report to the managing editor, and work closely with our Menlo Park and San Francisco-based editor-in-chief and executive editor.

Founded in 2009 by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, Andreessen Horowitz (known as "a16z") is a venture capital firm in Silicon Valley, California, that backs bold entrepreneurs building the future through technology.

We are stage agnostic: We invest in seed to late-stage technology companies, across the consumer, enterprise, bio/healthcare, crypto, and fintech spaces. a16z has $19.2B in assets under management across multiple funds, including the $1.4B Bio funds, the $3.1B Crypto funds, and the Cultural Leadership Fund.

The Role

We’re looking for a strong Editor to join Andreessen Horowitz’s expanding editorial team, reporting to the managing editor and working very closely with our editor in chief and executive editor, based in our offices in Menlo Park and San Francisco.

Our editorial mission is to be the go-to place for understanding technology, innovation, and change, as it impacts all of our lives. We are here to help make sense of it all -- not just for the builders, but for the tech curious and anyone seeking to understand the future, now. We are unapologetically pro-tech, pro-future, pro-change. But we are also “informed optimists”, not freewheeling futurists making predictions without any skin in the game.

Given our unique vantage point, our content directly influences the narratives and conversations around what’s going on, why does it matter, how does it work, and more as “software eats the world” -- really, as technology becomes central to the way we live, work, eat, play.

Over the last several years, we’ve built a strong editorial presence and de facto media outlet -- through our podcast network which includes the chart-topping a16z Podcast; oft-cited articles, reports, and op-eds that have also been syndicated or lauded by leading mainstream media outlets; a suite of newsletters that regularly reach hundred of thousands of readers; and a budding YouTube channel. Our strategy is multi-channel, multi-modal and, in combining the best of media with the best of audience development, we believe represents the future of media.

Part of this includes sharing the right mix of fresh and “expert” voices -- not just internal but external, across our networks and beyond -- to help argue what the future looks like (tech trends, A to Z) and/or share how to build that future (e.g., company-building content that is not served by bloggers and business schools).

The Editor will help establish and expand this effort both strategically and tactically by sourcing, assigning, developing/shaping, and hands-on editing a diverse network of contributors, both one-time and regulars.

These voices will share their views only in first person (not reported interviews), ideally from a first-principles perspective and can range from established leaders (academics, executives, etc.) and thinkers (authors, etc.) to up-and-coming voices and especially non-traditional writers (whether from companies or newsletters). The opinions editor will need to collaborate closely across all sections, including with topic editors.

This is a great opportunity for a strong candidate who is bullish on the future of media and technology, but would like to work in a non-traditional media outlet; is interested in leading vs. lagging indicators (not just what’s going on but what’s possible); and who wants to be a part of the future of media in all forms.

To Join Our Team, You Should Be Excited To

  • Assign, source, and edit op-eds and other ideas-driven pieces for the opinion section, with a focus on fresh, deep, and/or differentiated takes that make sense of tech and the future.
  • Manage talent both one-time (especially as we are in a relationships business) as well as develop and support select regular contributors and occasional special “ideas” campaigns.
  • Manage the editorial calendar for all our opinions coverage, including curating and producing written longform op-eds, as well as contribute to other mediums like podcasts, email, graphics, and even occasionally video.
  • Work closely with the entire editorial team to carefully track relevant trends in industries and most relevant/interesting angles; surface timely hooks for opinions and others’ pieces; manage a network of relevant experts and proactively identify talent, viral pieces, and more .
  • Define and execute on strategy and tactics for all aspects of op-ed content across our media operation -- this is a job for someone who is both a big picture thinker as well as a hands-on doer
  • Track feedback loops and run experiments for the content they own, including content marketing in the form of social media, newsletters, network/lists/CRM, as well as uptake/sentiment (this will be in collaboration and with guidance from our growth marketing team and managing editor)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Infovore, feed-follower, and hungry reader of others’ content; someone who is deeply intellectually curious, and not precious about whether items come from mainstream media outlets or indie newsletters and other forums.
  • Have methods for tracking signals on what’s happening and, more importantly, why it will will matter, figuring out where it is/isn’t relevant.
  • Can juggle lots of projects at once and meet deadlines, yet also maintain high standards + attention to detail -- especially rigor, high bar for credibility, fact checking including primary source references, and more.
  • Strong background in argument, logic, rhetoric, or other (even if not formally trained) -- can spot an argument, spot fallacies, and knows how to make things stronger without being arbitrary about it.
  • Specialize in both finding fresh ideas and angles from a wide range of voices, thinkers, and builders and in strategically shaping those ideas into compelling, thoughtful arguments that are differentiated from all the rest.
  • Experience editing and working in a media outlet or equivalent in other forms: either managing others’ pieces and creatives (such as in moderating forums, managing research, or other relevant expertise) -- if it’s not obvious to us, feel free to make the case why and how in your cover letter!
  • Collaborates well with many personality types/ conflicting opinions, while holding your own and bringing clarity and direction through it all… someone who gets things done.
  • Open minded in running experiments and figuring out what’s working/not
