The Sydney Morning Herald, Australia’s most widely-read masthead, is currently seeking applications for the newly created role of Deputy Editor. Reporting directly to the Editor, this role will play a critical part in driving the editorial vision for the masthead whilst supporting the strategic direction of the business.
Recently celebrating its 190th birthday, The Sydney Morning Herald is the oldest continuously published newspaper in the country. We have a rich history of courageous, quality and unbiased journalism. In 2021, we remain in a stronger position than ever with over 9 million readers consuming our journalism in print and online each month.
For the position of Deputy Editor, we are looking for a candidate with excellent journalistic credentials, strong leadership qualities and the ability to make great decisions. We have built a strong culture in our newsroom and are looking for someone who can both support and continue to build that positive culture. A passion for what we do and an affinity with the Herald as a brand is a must.
About The Role
The heart of this role is to support the Editor in driving subscription growth through editorial excellence. Specifically this will involve.
- Ensuring quality control of editorial content on a day-to-day basis
- Liaising with editors and business units across Nine Publishing to ensure the best editorial result for SMH and an alignment with broader strategy
- Oversee staffing matters across SMH, including managing reporting lines, recruitment processes and retention
- Driving and implementing specific newsroom projects as required
- Provide coverage for the Editor at designated times during the week and when they are on leave.
Nine supports flexible working arrangements, subject to the needs of individual jobs. Please note that this role will require some regular work on evenings and on weekends as required.
