Education Week is looking for a versatile and agile reporter who can pivot on the daily news; provide complementary sidebars and derivatives of news-based content independently.

Education Week is currently seeking a smart, ambitious, general assignment Contract Reporter/Writer to help us cover news, trends, and some deep dives into district, state, federal-level policy, and political developments in education, as well as social and cultural trend pieces with a connection to K-12.

We’re looking for a versatile and agile reporter who can pivot off the daily news; provide complementary sidebars and news-based content derivatives independently and in tandem with subject-area/beat reporters; work with multiple editors across editorial teams; has familiarity with, and sophistication in coverage of government and politics; has proven source development skills; ability to deliver fast-turnaround, as well as longer-range content with style, voice, edge, and clarity for a highly engaged audience of professional educators, researchers, and policymakers.

The position also requires solid writing skills, a curiosity about developments in K-12 education, the ability to use social media and other tools to engage audience members, and an interest in data-driven storytelling and analysis. We need someone digitally savvy, conscientious, and solution-focused, who thrives in the fast-paced and ever-changing environment that is digital news, and who is willing to take on multiple tasks as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree, with a minimum of 5 years related experience in a news/media/information organization.
  • Knowledge of the field of K-12 education or a hunger to learn more about it.
  • Strong news judgment; ability to recognize news and trends in education and conceptualize appropriate stories and other content that is relevant to audiences of school teachers, leaders, district leaders, researchers, and education policymakers.
  • Skilled research, reporting, and writing abilities.
  • Curiosity about reader analytics and the ability to use data about audience trends to steer content.

This 6-month temporary contractor position will require about 40 hours of work per week. Pay is commensurate with skills and experience and will be discussed directly with the candidate. We will consider both candidates in the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore area and those who telework from remote locations.
